I have been involved in education for 10 years and the past 6 years have been at River Road Middle School. My husband, Keith and I have been married for 25 years and we have three children: Michelle, Morgan and Molly. My hobbies are gardening and going out to eat. TINA BYRUM - Speech - I am from Berte County, N.C.  I graduated from East Carolina University in May 2000, with a Masters degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I married Tim Byrum in June 2000. My husband recently received his Masters degree in Music from East Carolina University in May 2006. MICHELE CHAPPELL- 6th Grade - Math/Science - I have taught 6th Agrade at RRMS since 1998. I substituted for 1 year through out the Elizabeth City Public Schools before teaching full time. I am a graduate of West Liberty State College with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education- Multi Subject K-8 and minored in Early Childhood Education Pre-K-K. I am a native of Follansbee, West Virginia ( Northern Panhandle of WV) and it's 1 hour outside of Pittsburgh, PA. (Brad Paisley went to West Liberty for the first two year of college. I got to hear his songs 

 before he was famous! My husband was in the Jazz band with him.) My husband is a sergeant with the Currituck County Sheriff's Office. I have three sons, Anthony, Jared and Williams. I also have 3 dogs and 2 cats.  My hobbies are to spend as much time with my family (husband , children and pets) as possible. I love to go on family outings together. I also love to do creat craft activities. My motto is "You must believe to succeed". I help sponsor the Mathcounts Club and the Spirit Club.

NAVA COPPIN - 8th Grade - Science My Motto is "All Children Can Learn". I am a graduate of the class of 1998 from Elizabeth City State University. After college I moved to Richmond, Virginia where I was an employee of the Medical College of Virginia. After five years, I decided to move back to Elizabeth City and become a teacher. I am married and we have one child, whose name is Choyce Isaiah Coppin. He is the joy of both our lives. I am the thrid sibling of ten! We have a gospel group called the "Faithway Doves". We are all excited about the future with our singing career.

SUSAN COVINGTON - Athletic Director / Healthful Living Teacher I have been teaching and coaching for 9 years. I have a B.S. degree in Physical Education from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. This is my 2nd year as Athletic Director at RRMS. I am a native of Newport News, VA. I taught PE and coached for 7 year in Newport News before I moved to Elizabeth City. I will be starting my Master's programs in P.E. this summer at West Virginia University. My hobbies are softball, basketball, volleyball, going to the beach, and

I have an Associates of the Art5s Degree from the College of the Albermarle and a Bachelors degree in History Education from Elizabeth City State University. CHRIS DOEPKER - 8th Grade - Social Studies  - I'm originally from Ottawa, Ohio, and graduated from OGHS in 1981, the entered the Air Force as a Security Policeman. I later became a First Sgt. and retired in July 2004. In December 2003, I received my B.A. degree in History. Since July 2004, I worked for UPS as an Air Driver & The National Park Service as an Interpeter at the newly opened Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. I married the form Lisa Berry of Shiloh, N.C. and have three children; Katlyn, Taylor and Nicholas.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - DAVID HAYES - I am from Hickory, North Carolina. I graduated high school from Hudson High School (now South Caldwell High School) in Hudson, North Carolina, received my B.S. degree from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, my M.S. degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and my Advanced Certificate from Old Dominion University. I began teaching Health and Physical Education while coaching football and track at Booker T. Washington in Norfolk in 1973. I spent the next 18 years teaching in Norfolk Public Schools

 and coaching football, track, tennis, swimming, wrestling, and golf. I became a School Administrator in the Norfolk Public Schools in 1991 until 2004. In February of 2004, I accepted the position of Assistant Principal at River Road Middle School. I enjoy playing golf and tennis with my friends, as well as traveling with my wife, Lori.

LINDA HOULROYD - School Secretary - I am originally from New Jersey and moved to Elizabeth City in 1992 due to my husband being transferred with the U.S. Coast Guard. I began working in the school system as a school secretary in 1996 at P.W. Moore Elementary School, and moved to RRMS in 2004. I am married to Tom Houlroyd, who is the Athletic Trainer at RRMS. We have two sons: Tommy and Kevin, who have both graduated from Northeastern High School.

BLAIR JACKSON - Media Coordinator - I was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and graduated from Elizabeth City High School. I attended Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina and East Carolina University receiving my B.S. degree in Elementary Education and Library Science. I have been in education since 1970, when I was a Preschool teacher and Kindergarten teacher, then became an Elementary School Librarian and then Media Coordinator for River Road Middle School.  I have been

at River Road Middle School since it opened in 1998. I am married to George S. Jackson, a professor at Elizabeth City State University and we have three children, Jenny, John and Kate. PRINCIPAL - CAROLYN JENNINGS -  I became Principal of RRMS in 2002. I have been in the teaching profession for more than 25 years. I taught for 7 years at Camden High School as a Science Teacher and for 8 years at Northeastern High School. I was an Instructional Specialist at River Road Middle School for 2 years. Assistant Principal at J.C. Sawyer for 2 years and Assistant Principal at Pasquotank High School for 2 years. I received my Associate of Arts from the College of the Albemarle and my Bachelor of Science Degree From Elizabeth City State University, Masters at East

Carolina University and Education Specialist from Eastern Carolina University (Superintendent's Certificate- 6 year degree). I am a native of Elizabeth City. My husband Clarence works for Sprint and is on the Camden Board of Education. We have two sons, Barry who is a lawyer in Raleigh with Hedrick and Eatmen and my other son Brent who has graduated from NCSU with a Masters in AG extension education and works at NCSU as a youth livestock program specialist. My hobbies are cooking and gardening. My motto is: "Hard work and perseverance pays off". This year at RRMS I want to make a positive difference in the lives of the people I touch.

I have been involved in education for 25 years and at River Road Middle School for 7 years. I am married to my wife Vickie for 25 years and we have two children. CAROL KUTCHENRITER - 8th Grade - Math - I was born and raised in Wisconsin where I attended the University of Wisconsin, Lakeland College, and Fox Valley Technical College while working full-time for an international company in various areas of the Accounting Department. In 1988, I finally acquired an Associate Degree in Accounting. In 1992, I headed southeast for Virginia where I attended Old Dominion University and acquired my Master's Degree in Education with concentration areas of Mathematics

and Science in 1998. I began teaching in North Carolina in 2001. My hobbies are outdoor activities, conversation, and watching movies.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - LEVAR MIZELLE A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart. Since 2000, I have enjoyed doing so. I graduated from ECSU in 2000 and received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (K-6). I enjoy teaching, singing, traveling, listening to music and having fun here at RRMS. I am a sponsor of the Board Games Club and served as the Boy's Track Coach since 2004. At RRMS, I strive to make sure all students get the best education designed for their individual needs. I am currently in the process of working toward attaining my Master's Degree. I am a native of California. I have lived in Elizabeth City since June of 1991. I am a single Mom with four teenagers, who are actively involved in sports and church. My hobbies are reading

and listening to Christian music, singing in my church choir, and enjoying my children. My motto is " Be the best you can be and never give up!" Can't is not a word in my vocabulary. RONALD NIXION - TMD Assistant - During your lifetime of living, learn to breathe and relax. My daughter will continue her education at Pitt Community College with a major in Bio-Technology. My motto is "whatever

MICHAEL OWNEY - Technology Assistant  - I am a native of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, graduate of Northeastern High School in 1973, received my B.S. degree in Education from Roanoke Bible College in 1977, then earned my M.A. Degree from Virginia Tech in Instructional Technology in 2003. For  fifteen years I served in located ministries as Assistant Minister and Senior Minister.  I also worked 12 years as a Teacher (5th grade for five years and High School for 7 years) and also worked as the Network Administrator for Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Virginia.   I am a Certified A+ Computer 

Technician and trained in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Novell. I am the owner and operator of Tidewater Micro Technologies, which does computer repair and upgrades, network installations and web design and development,  My hobbies are woodworking, wood carving, music and computers. My wife, Sandy, is employed by Roanoke Bible College, and I have two sons: Aaron (Jr. Hi Teacher),  his wife, Kari, and their son, Micah (born May 2005), who live in Valparaiso, IN and Jason (Manager for a clothing chain), his wife, Erin, and their son, Reese (born December 2005), who live in Waynesboro, VA.

This is my 2nd year as a public school teacher, I have worked in Staff Education at Albemarle Hospital for 9 

years and there taught Communication Skills classes and Guest Relations Classes. I have been at River Road Middle School for two years. I am married and have two children: one boy who is 8 years old and one girl who is 6 years old. My hobbies are reading, bowling and traveling. I received my B.S. in Recreation - Cheyney State University, PA and my Certification in Teacher Education from ECSU. I was born in Washington, DC, but I was raised in Elizabeth City. I have 2 sons, Derrick and Jared, 1 daughter, Jasmine. I enjoy reading, cooking, traveling, all types of music, especially gospel and jazz and spoiling my grandchildren. My motto is "Feel the dignity of a child. Do not feel superior to him, for 

you are not." My goal at RRMS this year is to teach my students that they are all special and that they have to work hard if they want to succeed. I hope I can assist them in building the self-confidence and develop a love for learning, especially reading.

JUDI STUART - A.I.G. Facilitator - I began my teaching career in adult education at COA in 1970 after graduating from East Carolina University with a B.S. in English. Later I taught in Camden County and Pasquotank County. I became certified in Gifted Education, Intermediate Education, Communications, and Mentoring. My first year at RRMS was 2004-2005. My husband, J.E.B., now a retired principal, and I married in 1969 and have three children: Eddie born in 1973, Laura born in 1979 and Becca born in1985. We now have two grandchildren,

James born in 2002 and Caroline born in 2005. Education has become the family business with my older two children marrying teachers and our youngest starting her teaching career next fall, 2006. My motto is "Practice what you preach and stand firmly on your principles". I enjoy scrap booking, reading, antiquing and cruising on the river on our pontoon boat. I am also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary educators' society and I am a past Teacher of the Year. I can think of no better way to have spend my life than working with children to help them discover their gifts

Music Ed. from Hampton University. I am a native of Elizabeth City. I am married to my Husband, Chester. We have 1 daughter, Valerie, grandchildren Devven and DeVetta. My mother Hannah Owens taught in Elizabeth City School for 39 years. My father is a Retired Minister and Federal Civil Employee. My hobbies are reading and traveling.  My motto is "Everybody is capable of learning."

We all make mistakes, but we use those mistakes as learning tools. This year at RRMS I would like to teach students to be the very best they can be by using all that they have to the fullest.
