Attendance/Absence Policies and Procedures:

A course grade is composed of two elements, attendance and academic achievement. For this reason, a student may be in danger of failing a course if the requirements of academic achievement and attendance are not met. Teachers, administrators, and parents will review the attendance if excessive absences are a problem. A decision will be made regarding credit for course.

Students who participate in school-sponsored events (field trips, athletics, etc.) are counted as present.

In the case of an absence, it shall be the responsibility of the student to bring to school a note signed by a parent/guardian giving the reason for the absence. A student returning from an absence without a note shall be coded unexcused until cleared by the homeroom teacher. A note must be brought in within 24 hours of returning to school or the absence counts as unexcused. Notes from parents/guardians must state the reason for the absence. "Personal Business" is not acceptable and will be coded unexcused. A doctor or hospital must document cases of prolonged illness. Students who have excused absences will be given the opportunity to complete assignments missed while absent. It is the student's responsibility, immediately upon returning to school, to make arrangements with the subject teacher to make up work missed during the excused absence. The make-up work should be done within one week upon returning to school.

All documentation of absences or notes from parents should be submitted to the homebase teacher in order to admitted to classes. In case of OSS (Out of school suspension), returning students receive their pass from Student Services at the beginning of the school day. Failure to show a teacher a pass upon returning is coded as unexcused absences and must be cleared within 24 hours with a note from home.

Sometimes, students know in advance that some unusual situation will cause them to be absent. In such cases, they should bring a written request from home at least two days in advance explaining the circumstances. This request is presented to the School Secretary who will issue the student "Pre-Arranged/Early Release Note", which is then signed by an administrator. All teachers from whose classes the student will be absent must sign the note. A pre-arranged absence is still counted as an absence from a class and is not automatically excused. No note is required for return to class if pre-arranged, since teachers have already been notified.

The State Board of Education allows excused absences for these reasons: illness, Quarantine, Death in the Immediate Family, Medical or Dental Appointments, Court or Administrative Proceedings, Religous Observances, Educational Opportunities. All other absences are unexcused.

Excessive absneces will result in a referral to Kevin Sawyer, district attendance officer, who will perform home visits. A decision will be made with administration determining if the absences should result in a referral to the court system. All students under the age of 16 are required by law to attend school.
