RRMS TECHNOLOGY POLICY AND GUIDELINES

The following policy was established to serve as a guide for staff at River Road Middle School. When creating this document the following were referenced:

  • Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Board of Education regulations regarding the use of equipment (EDC-R)

  • The Elizabeth City Pasquotank Schools Technology Equipment Checkout Form

  • River Road Technology Plan

  • School Improvement Teams Educational Goals

HARDWARE

Hardware is to remain in the designated area assigned unless authorized by the principal, the technology committee and the site technology representative. When moving equipment the above documents and goals of the stated plans will be considered.

Notebook and Laptop computers are checked out (to staff) from the Media Center for a two day period only. The following exceptions apply:

  1. The laptop is assigned to you (staff) for the school year.

  2. Arrangements are made through the Media Center to use the computer for a longer period.

SOFTWARE

Any Software purchased for use with the hardware at River Road must be approved by our Technology Committee. The Technology Committee will in turn review the goals set forth in both the district and local plans.

No Software shall be installed on the equipment without the approval of the site technology representative. Software programs purchased for home can not be shared or downloaded to school equipment.

Software programs which affect our network or are to be utilized by River Road must be accepted by our school district. Requests are made through the Media Center and then approval is determined at our school district level.

All Software must have appropriate licensed documentation held by either the school systems technology representative, the principal or the site respresentative. No Software is to be shared without the appropriate documentation.

Files and documents shall be saved to diskettes or A-Drive whenever possible.

TRAINING

Any staff member using equipment at River Road or checking equipment out of the Media Center will be required to go through training to insure that it is cared for.

REPAIRS

Repairs to equipment must be requested using our Request for Technology Assistance Form and submitting to the Media Center. You may and it is preferred that you send your request by email to the site representative.

INTERNET USERS AGREEMENT

The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Board of Education believes that students in our schools should be able to have the most current and complete information for learning available. One way of providing this information is through the Internet. The Internet serves as an electronic link to the most up-to-date information and news from all over the world. Each school on our district has the equipment necessary to connect with the Internet. These connections will allow you to:

  • "look up" topics in libraries thousands of miles away

  • Print out additional information about topics being studied

  • Read news in other cities

  • Talk with others through electronic mail

Before you can drive on the "information highway" there are certain "rules of the road" that must be understood. They should be read carefully. Ask questions if you don't understand something.

Once the rules are understood, you should fill out and sing a form that will allow you use of the Internet. Your signature means that all rules are understood and will be followed.

NOTE: Any student/user who breaks the rules will immediately lose some or all access to the Internet. There may also be other disciplinary actions.

INTERNET "RULES OF THE ROAD"

PROPER USE

The Internet is a resource to support teaching and learning. Any other use is NOT allowed.

PRIVILEGE

Use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right. This means that each student should talk with a teacher to determine proper use of the Internet. A school's principal will have the final say in what uses are allowed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Students who use the Internet should follow a "Code of Internet Manners". They include:

  • Be  polite. Don't send insulting messages.

  • Watch the language. No cursing or rude langange.

  • Make proper use. Stay away from improper or forbidden activities.

  • Keep private. Don't release addresses or phone numbers

  • Keep your identity. Don't log on as another user nor let someone log on as you.

  • Keep it legal. Don't send material, which breaks the law.

  • Make good choices. Don't use to sell items or for any other purpose not approved by the school.

  • Be responsible. Any damage (viruses, hacking, tampering, etc.) will be paid for by the user.

  • No sharing. Keep access information private

All Students must complete and have in their agenda at all times the Student Application For Internet Access, if you have lost your agenda or have misplaced the page (page 14) you may print it out here, get it signed and staple it into your agenda or carry it with you.
