Communication Skills
First graders will begin reading from their last reading book: Surprise Me and we will be assessing their knowledge thus far. Skills we will be working on are decoding words with the inflected endings: -ed, -ing, -er, and –est. Students should be able to identify the big idea in a story as well as a story’s elements : theme, character traits, and the author’s purpose . R controlled words with the er, ir, and ur spelling will be stressed. We will be reviewing long/short vowels, compound words, contractions, and the use of ‘s when showing possession. Students will continue to receive new high frequency words to study weekly and will have new spelling words to review for spelling tests. Please continue to read with and to your child daily. Students should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes each night and should be becoming more fluent readers. Practice recognizing sight words (high frequency words) and practice spelling their spelling words each night.
Math
Students will review concepts of time this month on both a clock and calendar stressing vocabulary words like: yesterday, a.m., p.m., date,etc.. They will be comparing geometric figures: parallelograms, squares, cylinders, cones, rectangular prisms, trapezoids and hexagons (plane and solid). They should be able to identify, build, and draw the different figures. Students will also collect and organize data by displaying this data on line plots and recording by using tally marks. We will talk about events that are certain, impossible, more likely, or less likely to occur. As you can see we are rapidly moving in math and it is very important that your child practice hard on homework and in class to master each skill.
Science/Social Studies
In Science we will look at changes taking place as Spring arrives. Our students will continue to observe and collect data on the many changes during the season of Spring. We will be visiting the Children’s Museum of Virginia in Portsmouth, Virginia. An emphasis on career awareness will be our goal for this trip.
Pasquotank Elementary School is the sunshine that brightens our children’s futures and is reaching out to make a difference in your child’s life.
