READING STRATEGIES - STEPS TO SUCCESS
STEP ONE: We design and implement quality lessons/activities to teach the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
STEP TWO: We monitor student progress using a variety of data sources to determine which students show mastery, need additional practice or will benefit from extra time or intervention/remediation.
STEP THREE: We organize students into flex groups and intervention groups four days a week to address individual needs identified through assessments such as TPRI, CBM, BEAR Inventory, fluency tests, edutests, STAR reading and math and teacher observations and selection tests.
STEP FOUR: We work with students during flex group sessions to:
- extend the skill when students are working above grade level.
- give students additional practice when they have not shown mastery but are working at grade level.
- give students extra time or provide intervention on a particular skill when they are working below grade level.
STEP FIVE: We develop Personal Education Plans (*PEP) to focus on specific skills needed to bring students up to grade level.
*Review PEPs twice a month to monitor progress.

- Encourage students to read between 10 - 20 minutes (K - 2) and 20 - 30 minutes (3 - 5) every night.
- Monitor daily reading practice through Accelerated Reader.
- Read aloud to students during the school day.
- Provide self-selected reading time during the school day.
- Differentiate instruction to address learning styles, student interests and levels of performance.

- Build vocabulary using Word Walls, Vocabulary Development (software program), student - teacher interaction and reading.
- Practice reading for fluency.
- Provide Open Circulation time in the media center for students to check out books as often as needed.
- Build classroom libraries to enhance self-selected reading time.
- Celebrate reading through reading programs (like Pizza Hut-Book It, Read Across America on Dr. Seuss's birthday, AR Challenge, Accelerated Reader), morning announcements and student recognition.
