History of J. C. Sawyer Elementary

J.C. Sawyer Elementary School opened in March of 1958 with six classrooms, a cafeteria, an auditorium and an office.  The professional staff of principal, part-time music teacher and six classroom teachers served 1st-6th graders.  There were no buses serving the school, no school-wide library and no para-professional support staff.

By 1960, population in the area had grown so much that the school could no longer accommodate all six elementary grades.  It became a 1st-3rd grade school, with two classrooms serving each grade. When complete racial integration of the school system was accomplished in 1969, the school was once again unable to serve all its students in just six classrooms.  Several mobile classrooms were added to the campus. A school-wide library was created in half of the existing cafeteria, and part-time positions for school librarian and physical education teacher were added to the professional staff.

A school-bond referendum, supported by the voters of Pasquotank County in the early 1970s, led to a complete remodeling of the existing structure and additions of a media center, music room, 8 new elementary classrooms and a kindergarten wing.  The mobile units were abandoned and 4 classes were moved into the new building.   J.C. Sawyer was now a K-4th grade school with 23 faculty members and 10 assistants. Staff members piloted many programs at the school, most notably a multi-aged, continuous progress grouping of students in non-graded classrooms.

In 1997, after a remodeling/addition to the building, merge was made with H. L. Trigg, a sister school. The classes from H. L. Trigg moved into the building that fall. Most of the part-time teaching positions became full-time, including those of a new computer skills assistant. Added to the office staff were an assistant principal, an instructional specialist and a SIMS coordinator.  The school became a K- 5th grade school...and the progress continued.
